Master
Sergio “Noy Sergio” Arcel

Balintawak

Latest photo of Sergio Arcel from Cebu, Jan, 2006

Sergio "Noy Sergio" Arcel was born on February 24, 1941, in Cebu City. Raised by his parents of Boholana mother and Cebuano father. Although life is a constant struggle, Sergio managed to support his family by doing carpentry, fishing and other jobs available in the region.

Master Sergio was already a proficient Eskrimador in his early years in Cebu when he met a much younger practitioner of Balintawak. Much like the other students of Balintawak, it was an instant eye opener. He was so impressed that he immediately sought out Anciong Bacon as a teacher.

He enrolled at Balintawak Eskrima Club at age 20 and he still continues to practice the art to this day.

Sergio continues his dedication to Balintawak by teaching all across Cebu and to other Visayan islands. He travels as much as 100kms by public jeepneys just to keep in touch with his students from other region of Cebu. He maintains the original version of Balintawak, just as it was taught to him by Anciong Bacon.

One rare Eskrimador master was Robert Cinco’s teacher, GM Gregorio "Goyong" Ceniza of Mandaue City, Cebu who specialized in the deadly art of knife fighting.

To maintain secrecy of his system and style, he would practice and teach in private. GM’s lineage includes the patriarch of Cebuano Doce Pares the Great Grandmaster Lorenzo Saavedra, who taught a distinct brand of knife fighting that he shared with only a few chosen disciples. Saavedra trained the extremely skilled Baraw Sugbu formerly known as Arnes de Diablo.
